Welcome to the Ecclesall Chess Club website.
If you're interested in playing chess and you live anywhere in the Sheffield area then Ecclesall Chess Club is a friendly club waiting to welcome you.
Players of any age and ability are welcome. We cater for all standards of play, from beginners right up to national level. We play in the Sheffield and District Chess League, and have teams in several divisions. On club nights when we don't have a match on, members tend to: play some friendly games, or they might go over one of theirs or someone else's game, they maybe study a particular opening, or even look at an instructive middle or endgame position.
Venue
The club meets from 7.30 pm on Wednesdays at the Abbey Pub on Chesterfield Road:
The Abbey,
944 Chesterfield Road,
Sheffield
S8 0SH

Fees
The annual membership is £15 per year. All members who wish to play competitive matches must pay the annual membership fee.
We always love to meet new members so why not come along and meet us? If you live in the area and fancy a game pop along one Wednesday evening after 7.30pm where you will be made most welcome.
Please get in touch with our new members contact, Colin Reid, via email at [email protected] or by phone on 0788 9979 447.
Ecclesall has three teams in the Sheffield and District League: the A team is in division 1, the B team is in division 2 and our C team is in division 3. We also enter two teams in the Richardson Cup, the equivalent of football's FA Cup, and we are currently the defending champions. Before covid, we had five teams. The D team was in division 4 and the E team was in the 400 league (a grade restricted league which is not yet back up and running). Hopefully, if our membership gets back to where it was, we will again be able to enter a team in the 4th division and in what was the 400 league if it makes a return.
These 'winter' league and cup matches are played between September and April. Then, in the summer months, clubs can enter the 'summer' league. This year we entered two teams and our B team were division 3 champions. We also usually hold a club championship. It tends to be a 5 round swiss competition, held on one Sunday a few weeks before our AGM.
Anyone who wishes to submit news items or games for publication is encouraged to do so.
This website will include news and information about the club as it becomes available.
